Nigeria’s senior women national team, mostly known as the Super Falcons, on Thursday stunned co-hosts Australia 3-2 in the group D second match of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup played at Brisbane Stadium.
Despite Matildas’ earlier lead, the Nigerian side came from behind to win.
The Australia team are the Matildas.
The win put Falcons on the brink of Round of 16.
The Super Falcons came into the match aware they had to avoid defeat to stand a chance of making it out of the group.
Goals from Uchenna Kalu, Osinachi Ohale, and captain Asisat Oshoala ensured that the Falcons go top of the group and increase their chances of making it out of the group stage.
The win put the Super Falcons on top of Group B with four points, the same as Canada who defeated the Republic of Ireland 2-1 and drew 0-0 with Nigeria.
A win for the Super Falcons in their final group game against the Republic of Ireland will safely guide them to the second round of the competition for a second consecutive World Cup campaign after achieving the same feat four years ago in France.
