The Nigerian Government has confirmed that no fewer than 130 Nigerians in South Africa have applied for voluntary evacuation following a fresh wave of anti-foreigner protests in parts of the country.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, disclosed this in a situation update posted on her X handle on Sunday, stating that authorities are closely monitoring developments while activating measures to protect Nigerian nationals.
She revealed that arrangements are underway to compile data for evacuation flights for those willing to return home, noting that the number of applicants is expected to rise. “So far, 130 applicants have duly registered for the exercise with our mission in South Africa, but this figure is expected to increase,” she said.
The development comes amid heightened tensions triggered by recent anti-foreigner demonstrations in Pretoria and Johannesburg, sparking international concern and renewed anxiety among migrant communities, including Nigerians.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu stated that Nigerian diplomatic missions are engaging South African authorities to ensure the safety of citizens, even as efforts intensify to de-escalate the situation.
She added that Nigerian community organisations in South Africa are supporting the ongoing registration of those seeking voluntary repatriation.
The evacuation move follows reports of violence linked to xenophobic rhetoric and protests across some urban centres, further heightening fears within the Nigerian community.
Authorities in both countries are expected to sustain diplomatic consultations as the situation evolves, with Nigeria maintaining that the protection and safe return of its citizens remain a top priority.
