Ahead of the double header AFCON qualification clash against Sierra Leone in the coming weeks, Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has expressed optimism in spite of a toothless performance his team pulled up in their last friendly games.
The Super Eagles took on African Champions, Algeria and Tunisia early this month, as build up to the AFCON qualifiers. However, Rohr’s side could not steal a win in both games.
Despite the criticism that trailed the friendly matches, the 67-year-old Franco-German tactician believes that the new players discovered from the last two friendly matches would prove a point in the team.
“Now, there is possibility to be efficient in our competitive games. Of course, Sanusi will be in my list and have chances to play in the two games. We are very optimistic in our next games
Speaking about the slip in the latest FIFA rankings, the Super Eagles gaffer who disclosed that the team’s camp will open on Monday 9th November, insisted that the friendly games were used to discover new talents.
“We will open Super Eagles camp on Monday 9th of November to prepare for our game on the 13th and 17th.
“It doesn’t matter if we are number 29th or 31st on FIFA Rankings. The friendly games are the only possibilities to test our players and we are happy about it. It is more important to find good players like Okoye, Sanusi, Ejuke and others in the friendlies. We wish to win absolutely but it is not the most important. The most important is to discover players to fortify our team.”
Nigeria tops group L with six points from two matches; having defeated Lesotho and Benin Republic.
