In the aftermath of the friendly encounter against Algeria and Tunisia, Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has revealed three players who have sealed their places in the squad as preparation for the African Cup of Nations in 2021 intensifies.
The coach said, the trio of Zaidu Sanusi who plays as a left-back for FC porto, Sparta Rotterdam’s shot stopper, Maduka Okoye and TSG Hoffenheim centre back, Kevin Akpoguma confirmed their spots having impressed in the games against Algeria and Tunisia.
Okoye, though unable to keep a clean sheet made a series of saves that prevented the Super Eagles from losing vs Tunisia when he paddled over the bar a tricky lob from Ben Slimane Anis two minutes from time; Akpoguma showed his versatility by switching from a fullback position to center back; Sanusi was fearless in defending and provided an attacking flare that posed a huge threat to the North Africans’ defense.
“We saw the confirmation for some of our players like in the goalkeeper (Okoye) position, like in the left-back (Sanusi) position, like also the new defender (Akpoguma) who is coming in choosing Nigeria instead of Germany, so he can play in the right side, he can play in the middle,” Rohr said to the Super Eagles media team “We missed two more players because Kalu and Ekong were not here.
“I think the team is in a good shape, we worked well, we have more options now for our list.”
Among the 26 invited players, only Dele Alampasu, Mathew Yakubu, Ola Aina who is not to the squad and Tobias Lawal did not feature in the games. However, they might still get the chance to done the new Super Eagles Nike Jersey.
