The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, who has been in office since 2015, has been impeached.
Mudashiru Obasa, who was impeached during plenary on Monday by the parliament, was accused of multiple statutory and financial infractions.
Though details of the circumstances surrounding his impeachment are still sketchy as at press time, Obasa, a staunch loyalist of President Bola Tinubu, is believed to be eyeing the governorship seat of the president’s home state in 2027.
The Speaker has been engulfed in a series of controversies regarding financial dealings.
He has also had a running battle with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who will step down as the governor of Nigeria’s commercial capital in 2027.
The removal comes barely a month after Obasa was accused of allegedly spending N17 billion to fix a gate leading to the Assembly complex.
Obasa has been replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda.
Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, was also a former chief whip of the House.
Mojeed Fatai is now the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
