The Federal Government has successfully evacuated and repatriated 1,230 stranded Nigerians from Niamey, stressing its commitment to protecting the welfare and dignity of citizens abroad.
Humanitarian Operation Details
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the humanitarian operation was carried out in collaboration with key national and international partners. According to the ministry, the evacuees returned in two batches, with 708 arriving on March 23, 2026, and another 522 on March 29, 2026.
Support from International Partners
The ministry stated that the exercise was conducted with the support of the International Organization for Migration, whose logistical and technical assistance ensured a smooth process. It noted that the partnership reflects Nigeria’s continued engagement with global institutions in addressing migration challenges in a humane and coordinated manner.
Reception and Inter-Agency Collaboration
Upon arrival in Kano, the returnees were received by officials from multiple agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Immigration Service, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, among others. Representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and security agencies were also present, alongside officials from Kano and Katsina State Governments.
The ministry highlighted that the coordinated reception demonstrated strong inter-agency collaboration in responding to humanitarian situations. It commended all stakeholders for their professionalism and dedication.
Profiling and Temporary Shelter
According to the statement, the returnees underwent profiling at the airport to ensure proper documentation and facilitate reintegration. They were subsequently moved to the Immigration Training School in Kano, where they received temporary shelter, meals, medical care, and other essential support.
Reintegration with Families
The ministry further stated that, following the completion of necessary procedures, the evacuees were safely discharged and reunited with their families, reflecting the government’s focus on both evacuation and reintegration.
Government’s Commitment to Citizens’ Safety
It added that the operation forms part of the government’s broader responsibility to safeguard Nigerians globally, while noting that authorities will continue to monitor developments and engage relevant stakeholders to ensure citizens’ safety.

The ministry also expressed appreciation to the Government of Niger for its cooperation, noting that the effort reinforces longstanding bilateral ties and shared humanitarian values.
