The United Nations has intensified security measures in New York ahead of the 81st General Assembly, with world leaders expected to converge on the UN headquarters from Tuesday for the annual high-level session.
Security personnel, police officers, canine units and law-enforcement drones were deployed around the UN complex as preparations intensified for the gathering.
Flags were also raised outside the headquarters ahead of the opening of the high-level meeting, which is expected to address major global challenges, including peace and security, development, global governance and reforms to the international system.
The African Union is expected to renew its call for greater representation at the United Nations, including permanent African representation on the Security Council.
The leadership of the AU and UN also held discussions on reforms to international financial institutions, debt sustainability and measures to enable African countries derive greater value from their mineral resources.
Kenyan President William Ruto is expected to use his participation at the Assembly to advance discussions on climate finance, global governance reform, peace and security, as well as digital cooperation.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Development Programme is expected to unveil an Africa-focused package addressing artificial intelligence, natural resources, data, talent development and access to capital.
The 81st General Assembly is expected to bring together heads of state and government, diplomats and senior officials from across the world to deliberate on pressing international issues and possible responses to emerging global challenges.
