Former Manchester United gaffer, Sir Alex Ferguson has given his personal view on the unending debate on who the better player is between Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentine’s Lionel Messi.
No doubts, both players have dominated the scene for almost two decades; winning numerous individual honours and awards.
Messi and Ronaldo have a split of 11 Ballon d’Or awards between themselves; with the Argentine amassing a total of six while the Portuguese have claimed five.
Sir Alex Ferguson who tutored Ronaldo when the Portuguese joined United 2003 from Sporting Lisbon has stated that both players are important to their respective teams.
“People say who the best player in the world is? And plenty people quite rightly say, Messi,” Ferguson said as cited in The Mirror. “you can’t dispute that opinion”.
“But Ronaldo could play for Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Doncaster Rovers …anyone, and score a hattrick in a game. I’m not sure Messi could do that.
Ronaldo’s got two feet, he’s quick, great in the air, and he’s brave, of course. I think Messi is a Barcelona player.”
Well, Ronaldo has proven himself in three major European leagues since he began his career in Lisbon, Portugal. Whereas, Messi has remained a Barcelona player in his entire career spanning 16 years as attempt to depart the club hit the rock.
When asked who he preferred between the duo in 2017 the Scottish man echoed the same sentiments.
“When the ball is at Messi’s feet, it is like he is wearing slippers. I think Messi is a Barcelona player But Ronaldo could be playing for Stockport County and he’d score a hattrick.
“He is brilliant in the air and has two feet,” Fergie said.
