Morocco has secured election to the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) for a two-year term following a first-round vote held in Addis Ababa.
The election took place on Wednesday during the 48th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council. In a statement, Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the country garnered 34 votes, a figure more than the required two-thirds majority to clinch the seat.
The ministry noted that since rejoining the African Union in 2017, Morocco has now been elected to the council three times. The kingdom previously served a two-year term from 2018 to 2020 and a three-year term from 2022 to 2025.
According to the statement, Morocco has played a constructive role in strengthening the council’s working methods and promoting best practices, adopting what it described as a responsible and inclusive approach alongside other member states.
The Peace and Security Council serves as the AU’s standing decision-making organ for conflict prevention, management and resolution across the continent. It plays a central role in peacekeeping operations, mediation efforts and responses to security crises in member states.
Morocco is participating in the Executive Council session with a delegation led by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita. The meeting precedes the 39th African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled to hold from February 14 to 15 in Addis Ababa.
